Early Season Efficiencies for the Charlotte Bobcats

11/17/2007

Erick raised the question and I am finally going to answer it: "Speaking of rookies--what do our respective efficiencies look like with Davidson and/or Dudley on the floor? Who, statistically, should be getting more minutes off the bench?" Here are the answers - every player, and how the team plays with them on and off the court.

Couple of thoughts (and please weigh in with your own in the comments):
-Matt Carroll is definitely earning his big new contract so far, keeping the team from being truly awful on offense. Not quite sure when he became such a defensive presence - that number is bound to rise.
-Jason Richardson has struggled - but it is getting better. Before these last two games, his numbers for the season were 0.863 ppp on offense, and 1.110 on defense. Perhaps he is starting to get comfortable with the new team?
-Richardson is not alone in his struggles - Gerald and Emeka are right there with him, off to slow starts. Again, probably due to the adjustment period with the new teammate.
-The Rookies...not looking so hot under this light. It should be expected though - most rookies struggle with defense in the NBA, and it appears that these two are no exceptions, with the team giving up over 1.10 ppp with the rooks on the floor. They have shown enough to think there is promise though, so just accept these early returns as growing pains.

Cinderfella Says: Thanks. I really like all the additional stats you are putting out there. I don't always completely understand what they mean or are telling me, but like them. Maybe one days you would add a piece explaining each and what you consider the significance to be?

Brett Says: Fair point - I had been planning to do this after the stats page was closer to completion, but considering this is the second request, I may need to revise the time-line.

Erick Says: Great stuff man...couldn't have asked for a more thorough answer. It is really surprising to me that the efficiency numbers with and without Emeka are so similar, especially since there is such a discernible points-per-possession difference between offense/defense. It is also surprising that somehow our defense is slightly better with Primoz on the floor. Gwaugh Derek Anderson. I just threw up in my mouth a little bit

Brett Says: Erick, all of the Emeka's numbers took a hit with the Phoenix, Philly, and Atlanta games (along with a lot of the rest of the team). However, if you check out the stats page now, you will see that Emeka's numbers have improved a bit. As for Primoz - I have a feeling that Sam has been hiding him on defense, playing him only when the matchups are right. I will run the numbers to see what kind of opposition all the individual players have faced and see if Primoz is putting up his numbers against weaker competition.
