DJ Augustin - 08-09 Season Review
05/12/2009The initial post in the end of season reviews starts with the award winning rookie, D.J. Augustin. The Bobcats' previous players who have earned this distinction are no longer with the team (Adam and Walter), but I do not think D.J. will meet the same fate. He showed too much promise in his first season - and the numbers tell the same story.
First up - the Bobcats were winners with D.J. on the court. A good place to start:
Continued good news - despite being undersized for his position (and any position on the basketball court aside from ball boy) - D.J. appears to be a competent defender. For the year, the man he was guarding scored less, shot less efficiently and turned the ball over more frequently than their season averages. Not bad at all. At the other end of the court - D.J. scored more often and efficiently than his opposition, though with below average contributions to rebounding and assists. The low assists are to be expected - despite my charts listing him as the point, really he played the 2 oftenwhen he was on the court with Raymond, and is being considered the 1 only for defensive assignment purposes.

UPDATE*** Final note: D.J. (by my numbers - which seem to stay pretty close to Hollinger's) had a PER of 14.93 this season and his opponent only managed a 13.67 - but the opponent's expected PER (based on season averages) was 15.00, which is nice to have for context (and rest assured, not all players faced an "average" opponent like D.J. - Boris is up next and he did not so I feel pretty confident in the creation of the value).***End UPDATE
Take a look at the full numbers and you can get a feel for what D.J. brought to the table (and what we have to look forward to/plan around going forward):

| Jackson Says: | Brett, do you think that DJ's defensive efficiency numbers are somewhat inflated by the fact that he spent a good portion of his minutes/season guarding the other team's second string point guards? Or do your numbers control for that? | ||

| Brett Says: | Jackson, it is something that has to be considered and that is why I tried to include his opponents season averages for everything. As I post more of these, it will help establish the degree of difficulty (or lack thereof) each player faced. | ||
