From The Defense Lens (on Rufus on Fire):
As the Bobcats build for the future, they would do well to recognize that they have a valuable defensive force in Emeka Okafor, and an above average defender in Gerald Wallace, that they can use as cornerstones...and Diaw will be moved, that's two spots that could stand for a defensive upgrade.and from a couple of days previously, Recognizing True Talent:
[H]e'll (Diaw) go back to being exactly who he was with the Suns, and we'll be stuck with a three man miscast in a traditional offense as a power forward who plays up and down offense and adequate defense.I am not trying to start an e-war or anything with a fellow Bobcats blogger, but...let's take a look at some numbers before we cast Boris as a weak defender. In fact, that is all I intend to do with this post - show some numbers, explain how I got them, and let them speak for themselves (as tempting as it may to be expound excessively).

| Rufus Says: | Don't apologize! We're all after the truth, here, and this is good stuff. It's making me reevaluate what I'm seeing. Since I'm operating under the premise that Diaw wasn't particularly good at either offense or defense before coming to Charlotte, the stats you cite make me wonder if it's something else, perhaps Emeka as a presence behind him, that is the big difference. Do you have the data for the past few years in Phoenix? And if it is Emeka, then what does that say about Gerald, since they've played together as long as both have been relevant in the NBA? | ||

| chef Says: | is it even worth looking at his phoenix stats considering they didn't even have to pretend to play defense. | ||

| KMils Says: | chef - before you call Phoenix out, remember that they played at a very fast pace which meant more possessions and more scoring. Traditional metrics (such as points allowed per game) work detrimentally for faster paced teams. I believe their defense is actually worse this year than in the last few years. | ||

| greg Says: | hi guys, here's some lights from france about boris diaw, don't forget he's got the MIP in phoenix for one reason when he averaged 13pts 6rebond 6 assist, 1stl and one blk, by game, when amare was out... boris is a guy who shine when he get responsability, but also (and, that can be a part of a culture problem) didn't want to "walk on " his teammates to gaet better stats, so sometimes, he just play for the others, even when he should take the game to him a little bit more, that's a quality and by far his worst trouble playing in the nba... but when he got that Mip , he's playing like that for a whole year, so, when amare was back, (the suns weren't that much better in fact...) he didn't have a ball, and his far less effective when he's nnot touching it... as far as defense, in phoenix boris was considered as the 2nd/ best inside defensive options, with marion, and with thomas when he was there... he's a far better defensive force than amare, who ok blok some shots, but let the line wide open most of the time... on the MIµP year, boris add to defend yao, (he played center) duncan garnett, and always managed to "contained" them, they get their numbers but never the big night against him....that to me , mean something...:-D go bobcats! |
